8). Bo-

This prefix is used to indicate in-laws e.g.

patrino (mother) bopatrino (mother-in-law) ; frato (brother) bofrato (brother-in-law)

A prefix recommended by the well known Esperantist, Montagu Butler for use in a similar context is stif- (step). However this is unofficial and others use duon- (half).

Since, however, there is a difference between a half-brother (who is a blood relative) and a step-brother (who is not) it would seem necessary to distinguish between them and so I, at least use stiffrato and duonfrato to distinguish.

9). Pra-

This prefix is used to show great antiquity e.g.

The adjective praa means primeval.

10). -Ing-

This affix represents a holder of one object (usually in one end only e.g.

Contrast -uj- which is a holder of many objects. Thus cigaredujo (cigarette box) cigaredingo (cigarette holder).

As an independent word ingo means a socket.

11). -Um-

This is an indefinite suffix (as je is an indefinite preposition). Its uses are few but varied and are best learnt by heart when met.

Do not invent new words of your own using this affix!

At the start of this chapter you should have learnt some 800 roots and independent words in Esperanto. Your actual vocabulary is now, of course, much larger due to the word-building ability of affixes. Thus mal- in itself by making the opposite of any word you know which can have an opposite, can increase your word stock by several hundreds.

You have almost completed your study of Esperanto grammar and so the main task for the rest of this book is to increase your vocabulary. I'm sure you remember back to your school days and the regular vocabulary tests in French! Very important in becoming fluent.

c). La ar^genta luno.

Kion niaj prapatroj opiniis pri la luno? Kompreneble dum ilia tempo elektraj lumoj mankis kaj do la nokta ^cielo estis tre malhela- la steloj brilis kiel diamantoj kaj la luno estis glora ar^genta objekto. ^Cu ili opiniis, ke la luno estas el froma^go? Kompreneble ne! Kiam ili rigardis ^gian belecon spegulatan en lago, ili ver^sajne opiniis, ke ^gi estas dia- la krono en la nokto ^cielo. Nuntempe sciencistoj informas nin, ke la luno estas granda sfero, proksimume kvarono de miliono da mejloj for. Tamen kiam viro kisas sian amikinon sub la belega luno, eble li denove opinias, ke ^gi estas vere dia.
